I need to signal an application that the system will suspend in order to
save all open documents,
because we really turn the power off.
To accomplish this I try to modify the power manager.
I try the following architecture:
Application
- registers itself to power manager on startup.
- saves document if power manager says 'I'm about to shut down'
- deregisters on close

Power manager
- adds any application that registers to internal list
- on suspend it tells every application in list 'I'm about to shut down'
- maybe waits for all applications in list to deregister?
- after notifying all applications, shut down
